Exit management

Below you will find information on discharge management for your patient who has had a tunneled indwelling catheter implanted due to a recurrent pleural effusion or ascites that is resistant to treatment. After instruction from a product specialist from ewimed Switzerland AG, the patient can carry out the recurring drainage at home independently with relatives or the Spitex.

To ensure that your patient receives complete care and receives instructions and the prescribed drainage set from ewimed Switzerland AG for drainage of the effusion, we would ask you to follow the following steps of our discharge management:

What information is important for ewimed Switzerland AG?

  1. Please send us the completed medical prescription, signed by the patient and doctor, directly before or after the implantation or at least 1-2 days before the patient’s planned hospital discharge to ewimed@hin.ch
  2. Please clarify your patient’s living situation. We recommend that patients ask relatives, friends and/or Spitex for assistance in carrying out recurring, temporary drainage and changing dressings. If the patient would like support from Spitex, please prepare a separate prescription for Spitex.
  3. If patients are transferred to other departments, a rehabilitation clinic, nursing home or hospice, you should make a note on the doctor’s prescription.

Please send us the doctor’s prescription even if you do not yet have all the information at your disposal, e.g. the hospital discharge, the drainage set for at home or the institution of further treatment. As soon as the fenik Service Department has received the doctor’s prescription, we will contact you by telephone within 24 hours to discuss the next steps. Please give the original doctor’s prescription to your patient to take home with them before they leave hospital, as they will need it for their compulsory health insurance.

What else needs to be done the day before leaving hospital?

  • Please drain and change the dressing.
  • Please remove the permanent drainage or drainage system in good time

1 | Disconnect the connecting tube and catheter.

2 Disinfect the valve opening with an alcohol swab.

3 | Protect the valve from contamination with a silicone or PleurX™ protective cap.
